Internet Security is probably one of the most newsworthy topics around today. All computers that are connected to the internet are vulnerable to three main types of threat:
It is easy to think of the internet as some form of mysterious and formless entity that exists somewhere in the ether: in fact the answer is far simpler. The internet is simply the networking of millions upon millions of computers using telephone cables to inter-connect, whereas in an office or a shop, say, they're connected by a more visible installed network of cables and junction boxes. The effect however is the same: any two networked computers, whether within an office environment of via an internet connection, are capable of passing files between them. So when you "surf the net" you're connecting directly to and viewing a web page file that's been saved on another computer, often on the other side of the globe. What actually happens is that the page you request via your internet browser (say Internet Explorer), is actually transferred to your computer as a piece of code that once on your computer's hard disk, is then interpreted by the browser and displayed according to the instructions in that code. |
Thus viewing web pages is just as dangerous as downloading emails, since both types of file are transferred to your computer for you to view. Hence the need to be extremely vigilant: all code, whether inside an email, an attachment, or a web page, is capable of hiding "rogue code" that can then infect your computer. What's more, that code can set up a direct link between your computer and another one in another country, and the owner of the remote computer can then take control of your PC. It is certainly possible to make your computer as safe as possible, but just as driving down a motorway can be very safe if everyone obeys the rules, problems arise when drivers are careless or take risks. What's more, even if your computer is heavily protected against direct threats, and practice "safe surfing", you are still vulnerable to internet scams and other forms of malicious behaviour. This is especially the case where younger computer users are concerned, whose youth and inexperience is specifically targeted by unscrupulous web site owners. As a result they can find themselves directed to some very unpleasant web sites or are misled into downloading some very nasty spyware and other rubbish. We can set up suitable protection against the direct threats mentioned at the start of this page; and also help you to ensure that your kids have an exciting, informative yet safe internet experience. |
