Repairing Old Photos The following are "before" and "after" renditions of a photo of one of my ancestors:
I have no idea (so far) of when this photo was taken but as you can see, the scanned image on the left is virtually useless; the repaired version on the right however shows the lady's features very clearly. If you have any old photos that could benefit from some serious but carefully-applied "digital darkroom" repairs, please let me know. I would have to give you a quote depending upon the degree of difficulty involved, and the number of photos to be treated, but the quote would be for a fixed price. Purely by way of example, the above photo was approximately 4" x 6" and the time spent was some 30 minutes; at my current rate of £60 per hour, you would have been charged around £30 including the cost of the final print and a CD (prices net of VAT). You will receive a digitised version of the original, as well as the result, on a CD, together with a print of the re-touched image. The actual size of the digitised images and the print will depend upon the size of the print you supply; although it is possible to "enlarge" digital images, the process does have its limits, and these are rather more constrained that would be the case with original negative film. If you would like to see larger version of the above, please click on the image required. A couple of other examples are shown below; these were sent to me as email attachments already in digital form:
I should mention that the above constitute "repairs" and not re-touching in that nothing has been changed in or added-to the original images. All that happened is that original detail has been "brought out" and extraneous marks (especially in the case of the old lady) have been removed.
