Personal Email Domain: £75.00 (£86.25 inc. VAT  @ 15%)

Most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) also allow one or more "free" email mailboxes in their tariff, typically in the form <your name>@<isp_name.co.uk> which has the following main disadvantages:

  • Most "first-rank" names will already have been taken, so you will be required to use joe.bloggs123@<isp_name.co.uk> or something similar.

  • Often the mailbox capacity allowed is quite frugal.

  • Should you decide to change your ISP, you're faced with the problem of telling everyone in your address book of your new email address.

What most people don't know is that it is very inexpensive to register your own domain, and pay for an email service that is completely separate from your ISP-du-jour.

Domain

A "domain" is the bit after the "@" sign, as in . In this case the domain is a "dot com" but there are others, such as .co.uk or .me.uk or even .eu, and the only requirement for registration is that the text element between the "@" and the first dot is unique.

The main point here is that to register a .co.uk domain currently costs a measly £1.99 per year; and even a dot com only costs £8.99 - hardly exorbitant. So if you have a very uncommon surname, it is possible that we could register unusualsurname.co.uk as your domain. However it is more than likely that your surname on its own, will already have been registered with all possible "suffixes".

This being so, there are other options:

  • Register a domain such as name-surname.co.uk; or

  • Choose some associated name, such at acacia-avenue.co.uk, assuming that you live in Acacia Avenue; or

  • Make up a name from scratch.

As mentioned, it is only necessary that the chosen domain name has not yet been registered; also it needs to observe simple syntax, in that where required, only a hyphen or underscore are allowed.

For the sake of clarity, should you wish to use the domain for your own website, this registration discussion covers that too; hence www.pc-firtaid.com
