Using the Auto-responder feature with your email mailbox at 1 & 1

One of the benefits of the domain-based email hosting package provided by 1 & 1, is the free availability of an Auto-responder service. When activated, your message will be sent by 1 & 1 on your behalf as an automatic reply to every email that is received. Many of you will have received my automatic reply if you've ever sent me an email.

Although I have the feature activated for every email to hit my mailboxes at 1 & 1, you might prefer to use it more sparingly, such as when you're on holiday.

I suggest that you create your message first: do this by opening Windows Notepad, accessed via Start | All Programs | Accessories, and composing your message. Save the file with a memorable file name (e.g. auto-responder.txt) so that you can revert to it in future. Once you're happy with the text, then still in Notepad, select the entire text (press Ctrl+A) and copy it to the Windows Clipboard (press Ctrl+C).

To access your Auto-responder feature, log on to https://admin.1and1.co.uk by typing this address (without the www prefix) into the browser address bar (or click on the above link itself which will open the site in a new browser window), and press enter or click on Go.

You will be presented with the following login screen: enter your account number and password and click on Login (if you don't have your account number and/or password or telephone 01604-870394).

After you're logged-in, the system normally defaults to the Administration tab; then click on E-Mail:

Next select the email address for which you wish to set up or change your Auto-responder message:

Towards the bottom of the E-mail Settings dialog box click on the the Auto-responder Edit button.

In the next screen, click in the "On" radio button, type in a suitable subject line, and enter an appropriate name in the "From" box (e.g. "Robin & Joyce").

Click in the Message box and paste the message from the Windows Clipboard - press Ctrl+V or right-click and select paste. Then click on Save.

Next click on Go to Overview.

At this point you can repeat the above for any other email addresses you have; and if you'll be using the same message, you won't need to revert to Notepad as the text will still be in the Windows Clipboard ready to paste.

IMPORTANT: Please don't forget to Logout before leaving the computer!
